CLASS LEVELS

Our class divisions are based on a student entering LaPierre School at the age of three with a progression of classes through the advanced level. Although this example is based on ballet, tap and jazz, other programs would run in a similar fashion. Also, there are times when a student will spend more than one year in a particular level (especially from pre-pointe on). Advancement to the next level is individually assessed according to ability, strength, flexibility, maturity, mental attitude and a consistent work ethic. Regular attendance in class is very important in a student's progress. Our syllabus clearly defines at what level to work each student.

We do not base our classes strictly on grade level in school, although we are sensitive to it. There can be as much as a three year span in any given class, and that class level still would be correct for your child. We try very hard to bring out the best in each and every child. We always have to keep in mind that a dancer's development has as much to do with body structure, growth pattern and mental attitude, as well as physical talent. Our program cannot necessarily be compared to any other physical activity or academic program.

Tot-Trot

For the 3 year old student. This is a 45 minute class with emphasis on creative movement.

Pre-Dance 1

For beginning students at age 4 (by September). This is a 45 minute class that is designed to develop coordination and rhythmic skills. Creative movement is encouraged. Enjoyment in an organized setting.

Pre-Dance 2

For students in kindergarten or transitional class. This class is a magnification of Pre-Dance 1, plus an introduction to some ballet positions and movements. Class length is 45 minutes.

Ballet/Tap 1, 2 & 3

This is a one hour class, with 45 minutes spent in ballet and 15 minutes spent in tap. Ballet/Tap 1 begins when a child enters first grade. A student will usually move up one level each year. After a successful completion of B/T 1, many students add beginner jazz to their schedule. This class will generally follow the B/T class, and will be a ½ hour long. At this point in the program, students begin to decide on one of the following two tracks.

Pre-Teen & Teen

These classes are designed for the student who does not necessarily wish to commit to a heavy schedule, but would like to continue to dance once a week. These classes will give the student a good work out and also offer real dance stimulation.

Novice

This program is available after completion of Ballet 2. It is intended for the serious student, who wishes to dance several days a week and is looking for a more intense program. Novice meets 2 days a week. These students are also eligible to participate in our summer and fall workshops. For the student who has chosen the Novice program, the following would apply:

Junior, Intermediate and Advanced
These three levels are for the students who decide they want to keep dance a priority in their schedules. A full class schedule will hold a minimum of 3 hours of ballet/pointe, 2 to 2 1/2 hours of jazz and 45 minutes to 1 hour of tap per week. Again, students may spend more than one year in any of these three levels. Advancement is based on the individual student's development, not on school grade.

Adult Fitness

In addition to our grade level student classes, we also offer an adult fitness program, Tighten, Lenghthen & Tone. Click here for more information.
